There isn’t a way around it: James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge hit. It earned a lot of really good reviews in 2014, but it was super popular with a lot of movie goers and was considered a box office smash it. When opening weekend happened, it wasn’t really a surprise when Marvel Studios stated that there would be a sequel out in 2017. Now it happens to be a really anticipated future titles.
Marvel Studios, is very tight lipped about the in-development details a secret, but sometimes some really cool information comes out and gives us a few more hints about the movie. That is where this comes in.
Below is a list of all the details known about Vol. 2 so far, from filmmakers and returning actors to newcomers that are expected to show up.
What came first?
Out of the 10 movies that are coming out from Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be coming out third following Doctor Strange and Captain America: Civil War. The first movie is supposed to come out as part of Marvel’s first calendar year with three blockbusters. Vol. 2 will be out May 5, 2017. This deep space store will be kicking off things for the year and will be followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming in July and Thor: Ragnarock in November.
This won’t blow any minds, but despite the fact that Vol. 2 hasn’t been fully assembled and brought before the ratings board, Marvel Studios is pretty sure that it will be rated PG-13. How do we even know this? Every Marvel feature to this point is rated PG-13, and it has even been confirmed by the CEO of Disney that there aren’t any plans to make an R-rated superhero title anytime soon.
It is quite true that Gunn’s first directorial debuts such as Slither and Super were blood covered messes that earned some hardcore R ratings, but Guardians Vol. 2 it isn’t expected. Even beyond the fact that Marvel doesn’t want an R-rated movie, making a sequel for audiences that need to be 18+ would be a hardcore burn to all the younger fans that are really into the first movie.
What is the story about?
Think back to the first trailer release of Guardians of the Galaxy, and you will see that not much is actually revealed about the story. The trailers showed Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket would be joining forces while in prison and that the adventure was about some orb, but that was it. This goes as the same for Vol. 2.
With that being said, there have been a lot of various interviews with the production crew that have offered some hints regarding where the story will begin and the themes of this film and they are interesting. Unlike the other Marvel sequels, Vol. 2, won’t actually use real time to caliber just how much time has passed since the first movie, and it will begin 2 months after the end of the first movie.
Though we don’t know a lot about the plot other than Star-Lord aka Peter Quill played by Chris Pratt will be reunited with his father and we know that the script will touch base with important subjects like where you come from, family and how it affects who you are.
Before the first Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn had never worked on a feature with a budget more than $15 million, but all doubts about him as being a blockbuster filmmaker were cancelled when he released his first comic book movie.
Through the whole production, Marvel and Gunn got along really well, which is why he is back writing and directing Vol. 2. At the San Diego Comic-Con 2014, it was made official when he teamed up with Chris Pratt on a video presentation to announce the release date.
Gunn has been quite open and accessible to his fans during the development of Vol. 2 by writing heartfelt letters, sharing storyboards, and even doing live chats. He has said that he has known for a really long time just where the first film would go and in May 2017, we will find out the extent of that plan.
