The success of Downtown Abbey proved that American audiences like some British period drama. That’s why Netflix is wagering £100 million on a series that is about the Queen – from her earliest years of reign to the current day.
Two houses, two courts, one Crown
With planned 6 seasons of 10 episodes each, the series promises to give us the inside scoop on two of the most famed addresses in the world – 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace, as well as the love lives, intrigues, and scheming behind the great events that have shaped the latter half of the 20th century.
As viewers, we are provided an inside view of the life of the British monarch from her 1947 wedding day to the current day. The opening season will be focused on the young Queen as she takes the throne and the building of a working relationship with Sir Winston Churchill.
Enter Doctor Who
Having won fans over as the Time Lord, Matt Smith is now swapping the bow tie for a flashy double-breasted suit as he plays the role of the young Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband. He is joining a cast list full of talent, featuring John Lithgow, who is playing Prime Minister Churchill, Victoria Hamilton is playing the Queen Mother, King George VI is being played by Jared Harris, and Clare Foy is playing the Queen.
Producer Andy Harries and writer Peter Morgan have been working beside the director Stephen Daldry to bring to the small screen “the desirable world of privilege and power behind locked doors in Buckingham Palace and Westminster.”
Netflix has announced the premiere to be on November 4, 2016.
