After what happened in Insurgent, Chicago was walled off as a part of the experiment, and the remaining factions all descended into chaos. The Erudite faction is then put on mock trials and executed, and Caleb, Tris’ brother, is the next in line.
Four is frustrated that his mother Evelyn has become a dictator. He begins to plot for a way to get over the wall with Tris and find out what lies beyond. But Tris chooses to break Caleb free first. Her actions put the rest of the factions hot on their trail in this race for the wall. Christina, Peter, and Tori join the group as they flee.
Once they make it to the other side, they see a wasteland created by war. While searching, the group runs into the people that made the Chicago experiment happen, and their technology is more advanced than any would have suspected. Tris then learns that she is the key to their efforts, but at what cost?
The production design is great. You will finally get a peek at what is over the wall – a wasteland ravaged by contamination and war. There are massive craters, red rain, ruins, and more. It would almost fit Mad Max, except there are no flaming guitars around.
What didn’t work
As so many young adult films these days, Allegiant is all about dystopian themes and post-apocalyptic setting. The problem is, the film can’t really set itself apart from all the others, even within The Divergent Series. The villains are alike, the twists and turns are similar, and even the ending is somewhat familiar. Yeah, it had drones, flying ships, and cool futuristic cities, but it just wasn’t enough.
Even though the first half of the movie is strong, the second is somewhat of a letdown, especially when Tris gets wooed away from all of her friends. The less she is in the action, the less interesting the story becomes.
If you happen to like the first two movies, watch Allegiant on TV. It is the weakest of all Divergent films, but hopefully the fourth one will bring us the big finish.
