FOX is going to have a heck of a time attempting to get specific factions of people to watch a show about a self-centered egomaniac from Hell. The new FOX series called Lucifer is both flashy and fun, just as the promotions promised. However, don’t expect anything grand, as you will be disappointed.
Yes, that Lucifer
You might have already guessed that Lucifer follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), who has escaped Hell so that he can have some fun on Earth, managing a nightclub and interfering with the lives of simple mortals. It would seem that he’s been up to this for some time when one of his protégés gets murdered.
This is how he meets Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). Since Lucifer is literally the devil, he does an excellent job of persuading people to answer all kinds of questions. This deception results in light-hearted comedy throughout the hour-long drama. It also results in Lucifer becoming an exceptionally helpful police consultant.
So, how’s the story?
Tom Kapinos, who is the creator of the series, plays with the idea that Lucifer Morningstar may not be totally bad, that God sent him down to Hell because it was the best way to take care of the souls living there. But it is clear that Lucifer has some daddy issues, making his character even more complex than you might expect from this kind of show.
FOX does plenty to expand upon that, leading to the introduction of psychologist Linda (Rachael Harris), who assists Lucifer into delving into who he actually is and his reason for being on Earth.
Another subplot also connects Lucifer with his past and potential future. Regrettably, it is the thinnest subplot of all, featuring Lucifer’s ninja underling Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) who does dirty work for Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside), the Great Creator’s other child, who wants Lucifer to go back to Hell.
